Thank you for taking part.

The engagement was held between 12 February 2024 to 15 April 2024.

We Asked

  • To shape the future of the Usher Gallery, we invited visitors and the local community to share their thoughts and ideas.
  • By inviting feedback through surveys, conversations, and online forms, we encouraged everyone to share what matters most to them.
  • Your responses gave us valuable insights into how we can make the gallery more engaging, accessible, and reflective of local interests.

You Said

  • Last year, over 400 visitors shared their ideas about what they wanted to see at the Usher Gallery.
  • People told us they wanted to see more local artwork, including pieces inspired by Lincolnshire’s landscape—its coastline, wide skies, and rolling Wolds.
  • Visitors wanted more variety, including contemporary art, ceramics, textiles, and immersive digital experiences.
  • Feedback highlighted the need for more frequent updates with clearer information about our exhibitions, and events.
  • Some people said they hadn’t visited because they didn’t know the gallery was free, where it was, or what was on display.
  • Suggestions included more loaned artworks, themed galleries, improved lighting, and greater accessibility.

We Did

  • We listened to your feedback and launched the first phase of our Arts Council England-funded rehang, with a brand-new display: Stories from the Stores.
  • The new exhibition showcases local artists inspired by Lincolnshire, including works like ‘Short Seaplane’ by John Hassall and pieces by Peter De Wint. We’re also celebrating lesser-known talents such as Phyllis Shafto, alongside new acquisitions like Charmaine Watkiss’s ‘Oracle of our Forebears’.
  • We’ve included more art from our vast collections—some pieces haven’t been seen for years!
  • The Heslam Room now features abstract and digital art, including a specially commissioned animation from Pickle Studios, responding to requests for immersive experiences.
  • We’re making it easier to find out what’s on, with improved communication and regular updates through our website and newsletter.
  • Accessibility and variety remain a priority, with plans for more themed galleries, travelling exhibitions, and collaborations in future phases.
  • We’re proud to continue offering free access to fantastic art in the heart of Lincoln.

The rehang will take place in stages, and the gallery will remain open as normal throughout so visitors can continue to enjoy art for free in Lincoln.

The Usher Gallery is free to enter and open from 10am to 4pm, Thursday to Monday.
