Childhood Memories

Back in the late '60's and into the 70's, we were very poor and couldn't afford a family holiday. Instead. my old mum did days out to make up for it. We did trips to the coast, Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln castle, etc and always The Usher Art Gallery. Mum would pack a bog picnic and we'd get the bus into town.

We would view the art and Mum would make a special point of any exhibits and how important the paintings/artist were. It fostered our love of paintings.

After viewing, we would sit in the grounds - the lovely shelter that is now railed off to stop homeless sleeping there - and have our picnic. Afterwards, my brother, sister and I would roll down the steep slope into the large dip in the grass. I'm not sure if this wasn't the highlight of the trip!

Having attended the Christ Hospital Girl's High School when it was located behind the Usher Gallery grounds, the gallery was an easy place to visit. And following a Saturday morning ballet class and visit to the library there was another opportunity for a visit. The Lincoln Camera Club used to hold a display of their work, which on occasion featured photographs of myself and a sister. Maybe the club no longer exists, as I haven't been aware of exhibitions being held in recent years. Now that Lincoln has become a university city, it would be wonderful if the university art students could hold an annual display of their work,  enabling the public to see their achievements while in Lincoln. The spring daffodil display in the hollow was always something to look forward to, happy to see they still flourish and the other flower beds have colourful displays. The Usher Gallery sign on the Lindum Hill side does not show up very well (hope it will be improved)  but the colourful flowers catch the eye.
