Selling up.

We tried to sell our 1930’s semi last year. It fell through because we couldn’t find a new house that gave us the space we have here, but also because of the survey results. Penetrating damp was biggest problem - possibly related to cavity wall insulation, but also definitely related to cracks in exterior walls and lack of soakaway. We have rectified all external problems, using a great local builder who had put up a gatepost for us in the past. We need now to rectify internal problems, which will include replastering and redecorating throughout. This MAY also include lifting floor to look at floor joists - we have a cavity floor - and until we look we don’t know what we will find there. While redecorating (blown plaster in some places) we would like central heating pipes and electrical wires at present in conduits to be chased into the wall. So we will need a builder, electrician, plumber, plasterer, and decorator. And we will probably have to move out and store furniture for a couple of months. This is just too frightening.

I, too, am a woman on my own and I understand how you feel. It can be frightening at times. AGE UK used to have lists of trusted local traders but that, too, seems to have gone. As this is a public health matter (women's mental health) then I believe that the County Council should compile lists of local vetted traders. Or better still, allow us to contract with their own tradesman.
