Volunteers' Week is a celebration of the millions of volunteers across the UK.

We want you to share your stories about why you volunteer, what you enjoy, and the difference volunteers make to your organisation.

As a council, we host over 490 volunteers whose commitment and drive help us deliver the highest quality of services. Without them, many sites would not operate to the standard our residents and visitors expect.

Volunteering not only helps others but also improves your well-being, helps you gain valuable new skills and experiences, and boosts your confidence.

    Here at Lincoln Castle we have volunteers in a variety of roles. We have Visitor Experience Volunteers who make sure each and every visitor leaves with a marvellous memory, and we have Grounds Volunteers who ensure that our site is looking great for our visitors. We also work closely with the Friends of Lincoln Castle whose volunteers provide living history events and guided tours. Each and every volunteer plays a huge part in ensuring Lincoln Castle is an amazing place to visit. We couldn’t do it without you!

    When I first came to Boston I was walking around the market place and South Street with my friends and we walked into Fydell house. I had researched it a little before I came and we were given a warm welcome by Sue and a free tour of the house and left to wander the wonderful garden. My old school friend pushed me forward and said I would volunteer there. I was a bit nervous and took a few weeks to get myself together but I am so glad I did.

    The Civic Group is under the community umbrella of The Boston Preservation Trust. We normally meet the second Monday of every month at Fydell House and discuss local issues relating to planning, civic pride, heritage and blue plaque amongst other local interests.


    Its a great way to get involved in the community, learn what is going on and an opportunity to make a real difference.

    Bob has been volunteering at Skegness day time opportunities for a couple of years. Supporting many people over the years with a Gardening project at Barrett court supported living. The garden had been abandoned, and was severely overgrown with weeds. But now is looking amazing, with all the hard work from everyone, and more people are using the gardens now. Bob said he loves being part of our team, and the people we support love him coming in to help too.

    I began my volunteering journey early in my working life, hoping it would help me build confidence in a variety of settings. It turned out to be incredibly valuable—not only did it ease my anxiety, but it also helped me learn how to engage with people of all ages and from all walks of life. I truly believe that without those volunteering experiences, I wouldn’t have the level of confidence I have today.

    Although I don’t currently have much time to volunteer, I really hope to return to it in the future.

    The Sleaford District Scouts have the most incredible Scouting volunteers. Dedicating hours each week with the children and hours of preparation behind the scenes. I've watched my children enjoy the experience and having been a secretary, Chairperson I'm now a very proud Beaver Lead here in Sleaford. Experiences to last a lifetime thanks to volunteers.

    Janice Taylor is one of our longest serving volunteers. When she retired from the WEA, she continued to use her experience to support Boundary Street Hub in Lincoln and The Wong Day Service in Horncastle combining her own gifts and talent for creative crafts.
    Janice’s volunteering has kept her active socially whilst she is physically active - cycling everywhere, swimming every morning and then helping her daughter walk all her rescue dogs.

    2 years: Victim Support in Lincolnshire.
    Girlguiding: leader rainbows, brownies, guides, senior section, county special needs adviser, division and county pr adviser, district commissioner, prospective trainer (Midlands and Anglia), mentoring new leaders, young leader guider (Rutland, Lincolnshire, Durham, North Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire).
    2 years: Millennium Fundraising Committee, Kirklington North Yorkshire.
    Scouts: Lincolnshire, assistant venture scout leader in Stamford.
    9 years: Trustee Barkston Village Hall.
    1 year: JUMP (joint university mentoring project) mentoring kids in foster care.
    4 years: Trustee and chair (3 years) Wilsford Village Hall.
