Fix our funds to fix our roads

For 2019/20 Lincolnshire County Council had its maintenance funding from the Government cut by a massive £12m. This was to have a huge effect on the county’s roads.

Because of the cash cut, county councillors voted to fill the void so that essential road works could still be carried out. They did this using council funding reserves for the year – but this is something that they won’t be able to do in the future.

This missing £12m pays for filling 24,000 potholes and rebuilding 37 miles of deteriorating road per year.

Now, as the Department for Transport begins looking

For 2019/20 Lincolnshire County Council had its maintenance funding from the Government cut by a massive £12m. This was to have a huge effect on the county’s roads.

Because of the cash cut, county councillors voted to fill the void so that essential road works could still be carried out. They did this using council funding reserves for the year – but this is something that they won’t be able to do in the future.

This missing £12m pays for filling 24,000 potholes and rebuilding 37 miles of deteriorating road per year.

Now, as the Department for Transport begins looking at funding allocations for 2022/23, we are calling on the Government to repair the £12m pothole it has left in our roads.

Cllr Martin Hill, Leader of Lincolnshire County Council, said: “It was incredibly disappointing when the Government cut our highways funding by 25% last February.

"We’re a large rural county and our residents place a huge amount of importance on well-maintained roads – something we’re doing our best to deliver but are struggling to fund.”

And this is where we need you to add your voice to our campaign to Fix the Funding so that we can Fix the Roads.

If you’ve been personally affected by poor road conditions, or your business has suffered as a result of the road system not being as good as it should be, then this is where your story matters most.

We want to hear from you. If you live or work in Lincolnshire then tell us about the impact this loss of funding has had on you. Join our fight for reinstating the crucial cash right here.

How does the current state of the road network affect you? As highways continue to degrade what will the long term effects be on you or your business? Tell us.

Every single story that you share with us really matters and is a valuable addition to the campaign for the missing millions in funding.

By talking about this we can all come together to campaign Government directly.

Do it here. Share your stories below.

Driving to work this week at about 7am, when its still dark, and saw a wide lorry coming towards me so I gave it some room. Because it was dark I didn't see these two craters in the road, both of them are the same width as my tyres and a minimum depth of about 5". I hit them that hard that all the lights appeared of the dash. I was only able to travel 1/3 of a mile before I had to stop. I got out and found my front wheel has been bent and my rear tyre is... I've never known the roads this bad. I live in a rural village and have seen an increase in the volume & noise disturbance of traffic. I accept that farm traffic needs access however not HGVs & quarry lorries that think rattling through at 4/5am is acceptable. I can only assume some of these are cutting through from the A15 to the A52. In one day, whilst working, I did an experiment. & counted nearly 100 different lorries of all sizes. Noisy enough on their own but then...they hit the potholes, the uneven road surfaces & drains. I contacted the... Continue reading

  • Meadow Lane

by Sue, over 1 year ago

Meadow Lane Lake is an ongoing problem. Access to my house is just impossible.

The drainage is the main issue with localised flooding a constant issue.

The underlying road damage and potholes are shocking not only by the flooding but the whole lane

The deepest part of the flood is 15" and deepest pothole drop is 8"

WE have pumped out thousands of litres of water over and over again

My neighbours wall is sodden, my car is wrecked and pedestrians cannot get through to access footpaths

  • A15 Folkingham

by RDC Folkingham, over 1 year ago

We live on the A15 in Folkingham and over the last 15 years there has been no attention given to this section of the road, apart from repeatedly filling in potholes over and over again, despite the fact that the A15 is a key north - south trunk route. We have witnessed a large increase in the number of HGVs with heavy trailers, tractors and farm equipment as well as other traffic. Frequent A1 closures, due to numerous accidents and other events, leads to even more traffic using the A15 as a diversionary route. The road surface has many large... Continue reading

LCC look at how you manage the funding you get from Government. Yes a cut in funding does not help, but the waste of money you allow in materials, bad management, poor scheduling of the work, time management of labour and lack of experienced supervision, on site not behind a desk/computer screen erodes public money which adds to the cut in Government Funding. I have seen this mismanagement for myself, in and around Horncastle.

LCC get your act together rather than blame Government cuts.

In 2020 I hit a pothole on little steeping aerodrome , it burst my tyre . So I took some spray cans to it and painted it orange and yellow , someone took a photo of it and I had to admit it was me , I've painted 100s of potholes , been on local news , newspaper like the Sunday times and Skegness standard and on the radio . I've upset the council and ruffled a few feathers but it has had results but they fill in the potholes and it crumbles back out again . This is going... Continue reading

  • Covid & still no better

by Bex from Sleaford, over 1 year ago

I have worked from home most of covid luckily but found that when I need to drive the repairs have failed and the only road that is better is from Great Gonerby going towards Belton over the hill. We need to get better at fixing the roads in this county to stop damage to vehicles and help people travel safely no matter what their mode of travel.

We live at Lissington, The road between Lissington and Linwood recently underwent some "repairs" although many potholes were not addressed, a number of the repairs" done are now crumbling due to the weight of our present day traffic, and remain a danger to all road users, especially cyclists and motor cyclists. What happened to the system of tar and chippings? This system sealed the whole road surface so there were no mid-road edges to erode, and was very effective for a long time.
