Fix our funds to fix our roads

For 2019/20 Lincolnshire County Council had its maintenance funding from the Government cut by a massive £12m. This was to have a huge effect on the county’s roads.

Because of the cash cut, county councillors voted to fill the void so that essential road works could still be carried out. They did this using council funding reserves for the year – but this is something that they won’t be able to do in the future.

This missing £12m pays for filling 24,000 potholes and rebuilding 37 miles of deteriorating road per year.

Now, as the Department for Transport begins looking

For 2019/20 Lincolnshire County Council had its maintenance funding from the Government cut by a massive £12m. This was to have a huge effect on the county’s roads.

Because of the cash cut, county councillors voted to fill the void so that essential road works could still be carried out. They did this using council funding reserves for the year – but this is something that they won’t be able to do in the future.

This missing £12m pays for filling 24,000 potholes and rebuilding 37 miles of deteriorating road per year.

Now, as the Department for Transport begins looking at funding allocations for 2022/23, we are calling on the Government to repair the £12m pothole it has left in our roads.

Cllr Martin Hill, Leader of Lincolnshire County Council, said: “It was incredibly disappointing when the Government cut our highways funding by 25% last February.

"We’re a large rural county and our residents place a huge amount of importance on well-maintained roads – something we’re doing our best to deliver but are struggling to fund.”

And this is where we need you to add your voice to our campaign to Fix the Funding so that we can Fix the Roads.

If you’ve been personally affected by poor road conditions, or your business has suffered as a result of the road system not being as good as it should be, then this is where your story matters most.

We want to hear from you. If you live or work in Lincolnshire then tell us about the impact this loss of funding has had on you. Join our fight for reinstating the crucial cash right here.

How does the current state of the road network affect you? As highways continue to degrade what will the long term effects be on you or your business? Tell us.

Every single story that you share with us really matters and is a valuable addition to the campaign for the missing millions in funding.

By talking about this we can all come together to campaign Government directly.

  • This hasn't happened overnight

I have worked on LCC Highways for over 30 year. This hasn't happened overnight. During the last 30 years the Councilors have always said that they decide where the funding goes and have taken Highways budgets for other demands.

I was walking from my home in Horncastle and intended to cross over the Horncastle High Street from the market place to the Punch House Building to attend a church service at 10 a.m at St. Marys Church. As I proceeded to cross over I did not see a road indentation and I fell heavily causing facial injuries. I was able to first aid treatment at Grace Boutiques in the Punch House building. The road surface at this point was uneven when it was examined afterwards

We were travelling by car towards the A1 from Horncastle on May 31st at 11.05 a.m.. We encountered a large circular pothole in the carriageway measuring 20 inches in diameter and 100 mm depth and we were unable to take avoiding action in time as approaching fast moving traffic was approaching . We both heard a loud bang. We decided to stop further on near the Cold Store facility to examine the car before going on the A1. We could not see any visible damage and decided to proceed without any other problem. On our return home, I approached Simon... Continue reading

What I don’t understand is why some roads have been resurfaced and those with large deep potholes are left unworked.

Having a family member just paying out nearly £100 to replace the tyre after dropping into a very large pot hole on the road. When other cars are parked on the road you are forced over and no room to avoid them.

  • How many tyres??

I travel to Boston daily for work along the A17. I live in Sleaford but I also collect my son from Fulbeck daily travelling the A17 from Holdingham towards Newark and back to Sleaford. There are a number of large potholes that have been repaired and deteriorated once again that are near Cranwell airfield and the speed camera. They are on either side of the road and one in particular is a jagged long pothole in the middle of the road, if not careful you hit it when heading east.

I have paid out for the same tyre on my... Continue reading

  • Please 'level up' our roads... by filling in the pot holes

by SLB, about 1 year ago

If the government is serious about levelling up, then a good place to start would be to fix the essential road infrastructure in rural areas such as Lincolnshire. The lack of regular public transport services mean that ensuring the roads are fit-for-use is a key part of supporting the county's socio-economic activities and community healthcare transport. A start would be reinstatement of the millions of £ that were reportedly deducted from the County Council's budget, but I suspect it requires much more investment. I personally would like to see where my road tax goes - is it spent in my... Continue reading

  • Potholes cover the main road in my village- Lincoln road/Jerusalem road

by Hannah , about 1 year ago
The main road in my village is falling apart and has potholes deeper than my ankle. They are so frequent that you can’t avoid them you just have to hope your car doesn’t break. And I don’t know if the paths come in the same pot of cash but they are a serious tripping hazard not to mention that these paths are outside two schools and a care home!
  • Valley lane/fen lane Long Bennington

by Matt82, about 1 year ago
I have now had 2 expensive repairs to make to my vehicle following damage from potholes on Valley Lane in Long Bennington. Each time I have reported these faults to the council they respond by filling a couple of potholes within around a month. There are also annual issues on Fen Lane, Long Bennington which the council respond in the same way. I understand the issues around funding but in my opinion the council do not help themselves, for instance they will repair a few potholes on fen lane one week then return on another day to do the ones... • Louth area roads

by VLH, about 1 year ago

There is a nasty pot hole now in the road near the British Legion in Louth town centre.

The road to Alvingham from Louth is full of pot holes and High Bridge Road in Alvingham is rapidly turning from a road into a track. As more houses are being built in Alvingham it is only going to get worse.
