Fix our funds to fix our roads

For 2019/20 Lincolnshire County Council had its maintenance funding from the Government cut by a massive £12m. This was to have a huge effect on the county’s roads.

Because of the cash cut, county councillors voted to fill the void so that essential road works could still be carried out. They did this using council funding reserves for the year – but this is something that they won’t be able to do in the future.

This missing £12m pays for filling 24,000 potholes and rebuilding 37 miles of deteriorating road per year.

Now, as the Department for Transport begins looking

For 2019/20 Lincolnshire County Council had its maintenance funding from the Government cut by a massive £12m. This was to have a huge effect on the county’s roads.

Because of the cash cut, county councillors voted to fill the void so that essential road works could still be carried out. They did this using council funding reserves for the year – but this is something that they won’t be able to do in the future.

This missing £12m pays for filling 24,000 potholes and rebuilding 37 miles of deteriorating road per year.

Now, as the Department for Transport begins looking at funding allocations for 2022/23, we are calling on the Government to repair the £12m pothole it has left in our roads.

Cllr Martin Hill, Leader of Lincolnshire County Council, said: “It was incredibly disappointing when the Government cut our highways funding by 25% last February.

"We’re a large rural county and our residents place a huge amount of importance on well-maintained roads – something we’re doing our best to deliver but are struggling to fund.”

And this is where we need you to add your voice to our campaign to Fix the Funding so that we can Fix the Roads.

If you’ve been personally affected by poor road conditions, or your business has suffered as a result of the road system not being as good as it should be, then this is where your story matters most.

We want to hear from you. If you live or work in Lincolnshire then tell us about the impact this loss of funding has had on you. Join our fight for reinstating the crucial cash right here.

How does the current state of the road network affect you? As highways continue to degrade what will the long term effects be on you or your business? Tell us.

Every single story that you share with us really matters and is a valuable addition to the campaign for the missing millions in funding.

By talking about this we can all come together to campaign Government directly.

I can fully understand why so many people buy 4x4 vehicles. It’s because of the terrible pothole ridden state of the counties roads!

I think personally a speed limit of 40mph should be imposed on Bardney Causeway due to the state of the highway until its properly repaired,There has been one death already and numerous accidents over the past 18 months.

I'm only a tourist and not a resident but the area depends on tourism for a major part of its income.

While visiting the area I noticed the street volunteer litter pickers and little chappie bin man doing a very good job trying to keep the beach and streets clean probably caused by the tourists in the first place.

In the early morning 5-7am trunch lane looked dirty, and the promenade messy.

On a recent Trip abroad the street cleaners were out early cleaning the tourist areas with road sweepers and hose pipes making it look tidy for when the... Continue reading

limited repairs have been done on the area between the entrance to Ambergate School and Barrowbygate - but only filling in major holes. -also minor areas have been left either side of the repairs. Road therefore still in further need of repair. Also the extremely tall trees in the same area have not been touched for several years and are overhanging the path - not to mention having some effect on the efficiency of my solar panels! The trees further down have seen work done - some twice and it would be nice if they moved up the road

Whilst the loss of funding is not helpful, a change of repair method might resolve the problems. At present when reports of multiple potholes in a road are made the contractors eventually attend and repair just one or two leaving others to develop. This no doubt leads to a further repair contract in due course which generates more profit for the contractors so I can understand why they do it. Surely the most economical approach would be to fully repair badly degraded stretches of road on one visit.

I am particularly concerned by potholes in the main part of the carriageway. We assume that there will be damage at the edge but nearer the centre they cannot be avoided when the road is busy with twoway traffic. At night they cannot be seen with approaching headlights.

I have to say that the A153 between Sleaford and the coast is in a shocking condition. there are countless potholes and even surface slippage ( on the approach to Anwick from Sleaford) It is beyond comprehension that the road has had money spent on re white lining it , with the white lines disappearing into the potholes! You couldn't make it up. I realize the budget for this is separate and probably done by a different contractor but what a huge waste of money. The less said about Chapel lane in Anwick the better. It has to be the... Continue reading
  • Sutton Bridge

by Stuck in traffic , 11 months ago
The works on Sutton Bridge are causing extensive distribution to the road network for the county and wider region. The A17 should be duel carriageway regardless. The bridge at Sutton is clearly not fit for purpose due to the need to have permanent signs saying queues likely, that highlights a prior knowledge of a road network design that isn't suitable for the volume of traffic. It is further compounded by the lack of public transport links in the area.
