Fix our funds to fix our roads

For 2019/20 Lincolnshire County Council had its maintenance funding from the Government cut by a massive £12m. This was to have a huge effect on the county’s roads.

Because of the cash cut, county councillors voted to fill the void so that essential road works could still be carried out. They did this using council funding reserves for the year – but this is something that they won’t be able to do in the future.

This missing £12m pays for filling 24,000 potholes and rebuilding 37 miles of deteriorating road per year.

Now, as the Department for Transport begins looking

For 2019/20 Lincolnshire County Council had its maintenance funding from the Government cut by a massive £12m. This was to have a huge effect on the county’s roads.

Because of the cash cut, county councillors voted to fill the void so that essential road works could still be carried out. They did this using council funding reserves for the year – but this is something that they won’t be able to do in the future.

This missing £12m pays for filling 24,000 potholes and rebuilding 37 miles of deteriorating road per year.

Now, as the Department for Transport begins looking at funding allocations for 2022/23, we are calling on the Government to repair the £12m pothole it has left in our roads.

Cllr Martin Hill, Leader of Lincolnshire County Council, said: “It was incredibly disappointing when the Government cut our highways funding by 25% last February.

"We’re a large rural county and our residents place a huge amount of importance on well-maintained roads – something we’re doing our best to deliver but are struggling to fund.”

And this is where we need you to add your voice to our campaign to Fix the Funding so that we can Fix the Roads.

If you’ve been personally affected by poor road conditions, or your business has suffered as a result of the road system not being as good as it should be, then this is where your story matters most.

We want to hear from you. If you live or work in Lincolnshire then tell us about the impact this loss of funding has had on you. Join our fight for reinstating the crucial cash right here.

How does the current state of the road network affect you? As highways continue to degrade what will the long term effects be on you or your business? Tell us.

Every single story that you share with us really matters and is a valuable addition to the campaign for the missing millions in funding.

By talking about this we can all come together to campaign Government directly.

Do it here. Share your stories below.

  • Mill Green road - Pinchbeck

by Paul.Devey-2caub0c, about 1 year ago
Over the past two years I have written 3 tyres off on the same stretch of road leading into Mill Green on the outskirts of Pinchbeck. It has been dark and after a heavy down pour the pot holes fill up with water making them nigh on impossible to see until the last minute when it is too late to avoid them.

I have had the cost of one tyre refunded by the county council but this refund nowhere near covers the cost and inconvenience caused having to change the tyre in the rain and dark and then get a... Continue reading

  • Accidents waiting to happen

by Batboo, about 1 year ago

I live in the south of the county on the border with numerous other counties. All have significantly better roads than Lincolnshire. I have just returned from an area of the country which experiences significantly worse weather conditions than we do with considerable rain and snow: the roads were brilliant, not a pothole in sight. I cycle the roads regularly and it is not only a very unpleasant ride but also VERY dangerous both due to the need to swerve unexpectedly to miss potholes and large areas of damaged roads, risking moving into the path of cars, but also when... • Worst roads in the country

by Ali, about 1 year ago
I have recently had a tyre blow out, alloy wheel damaged and alignment thrown out of line by hitting two pot holes on A17 at Leadenham. If a motorbike had hit the same it could easily have caused the rider to be thrown off which more than likely would have led to severe consequences. The state of Lincolnshire’s roads is the worst in the country, so bad that some of my close relatives and friends refuse to drive here for fear of hitting a pot hole or damaging suspension by being thrown around on roads that are worse than a... My business premises are less than a half mile from the main A road to Skegness but people are being put off visiting due to the state of the road, some are even turning around just metres away because of the amount and severity of the pot holes. These holes are a constant headache and have been reported many times. No one has been to repair the road since March 2020 despite a road survey being carried out. The man who marked all the holes last March recommended the road be completely re-surfaced
  • Extra unwelcome expense

by Chris, about 1 year ago
I moved to the county in the summer and have since had to replace 2 damaged tyres and repair 2 cracked alloy wheels on large potholes. In 40 years of driving I have never had damage of this sort and the Lincolnshire roads are the sole reason. One road was at Hagnaby just outside Sutton on Sea and one by Fulnetby near Wragby. The expense, time and inconvenience is unnecessary as the roads should not be allowed to get to this state. Living in Hogsthorpe I was pleased however to see one series of potholes being repaired recently and the... Continue reading
  • Fix my street reports

by Julie hillsmith, about 1 year ago
I report pot holes in my area about 2-3 times a week on fixmystreet . I have reported some pot holes numerous times because they get repaired and then reappear. This is because the road really need a proper repair not just a touch up job. I have had two friends in the last two weeks stranded but tyre issues resulting from pot holes. Lincolnshire is a rural county lacking proper transport infrastructure so we rely on our own cars more than most and decent roads is part of that need. Please please please repair and resurface our roads properly.
  • Money for Newark but not for our potholes

by Barbara Dibley, about 1 year ago

When marginal constituencies and target seats like Newark got money for being 'deprived' - what a joke - I thought that as we are safe tory seats we would get less. Lo and behold they take money off us. The only way to get more money is to be a marginal seat then they will throw it at us. So, although it may well go against the grain, vote for anyone but the Conservatives at every opportunity as they are currently taking the you-know-what out of us

  • Pothole Management

by Driving in the centre , about 1 year ago

I regularly drive around Lincoln and North Kesteven for my work and on the B roads particularly I have to slow down and sometimes stop if a vehicle is coming the other way otherwise I would go down a pothole that would undoubtedly not only puncture my tyre but take out my wheel and probably the suspension…again!

I regularly report potholes on the council website and have to say in the majority of cases they do repair the potholes, but it can take up to a month. However, sometimes they say they are not bad enough to repair! Months later... Continue reading

  • Very own fairground rides

by Richard , about 1 year ago
We’ve recently moved to the area from Yorkshire and can’t believe the condition of the roads around our area, particularly on more hazardous stretches of road that have shear drops in to drains. It’s only a matter of time before some dies in a ditch due to such bad road conditions. Me and my wife travelled on the coastal road from Huttoft to Sutton on Sea and I can honestly say I’ve now been on a fair ground ride that throws you about as much as that road does. You take your life into your own hands on that stretch... Continue reading
  • Painful car ride

by AJTH, about 1 year ago
I returned home from hospital and the ride was so uncomfortable after surgery and the constant bumps in the roads, due to uneven surfaces and potholes! This needs urgently addressing as even when health improved, still very uncomfortable and very costly to all drivers.

We all pay a huge amount on road tax so get this done, where are all those funds going to when they should be used for roads!
